Global tourism nears full recovery, spending surpassed arrival
growth
Global tourism is set to fully recover by the end of 2024, with
1.1 billion international travelers in the first nine months
reaching 98% of pre-pandemic levels, per the UN World Tourism
Barometer. Regions like the Middle East (+29%), Europe (+1%),
and Africa (+6%) surpassed 2019 arrivals, while Asia-Pacific
reached 85%, up from 66% in 2023. Tourism receipts outpaced
arrivals, with strong growth in Serbia (+99%), Japan (+59%), and
France (+27%). Longer stays and higher spending characterize
2024, driving economic recovery. Despite challenges like
inflation, high travel costs, and staff shortages, 60
destinations, including Qatar (+141%) and Saudi Arabia (+61%),
have exceeded 2019 levels, showcasing tourism's resilience and
global economic impact.
